Leveled Up: Class Stats and Gear

During the tutorial, within the first few quests, you will encounter quest rewards that offer you a choice of equipment item.  Knowing the "stats" important to your class will help you choose the best gear for you, making your progress easier in the future.

Each of the four classes, Cleric, Warrior, Rogue, and Mage, value different stats on their armor and equipment.  There are also four primary stats (one best suited for each class) and two secondary stats (attack power for rogues and warriors and spell power for clerics and mages).  Each class can wear different armor and whiled different weapons.

Opening your stats window {keying C for character and choosing the stats tab along the left), will show which stats are most important to your calling highlighted in blue.  When hovering over the name of the stat, it will also give you a breakdown of what other benefits you will receive by choosing this stat.

Clerics should always look for chain gear.  Usually, though not often, this type of gear will value wisdom above all other stats.   Choosing gear with wisdom will increase your mana pool (the blue bar of energy used to power your spells) as well as increase your spell power.  Intellect will also raise your spell power as a Cleric, but to a much lesser extent.  Gear may have a mix of the two, but a cleric should always seek out higher wisdom;  The large pool can be quickly replenished during battle.  Even as a tanking cleric you are looking for upgrades to wisdom.  Dexterity and strength will add to your stats as well, but in ways that will not benefit your calling.

Clerics can wield many different types of weapons.  The casting clerics (both healers and damage dealers) can choose either a two-handed staff, a two-handed hammer, or a one handed weapon and a totem or focus.  Clerics who are choosing to be the tanks of their group can choose a shield and one-handed weapon or a two-handed hammer.  All clerics can equip a wand, regardless of their role. (unused in casting animation - essentially a stat boost)

Rogues should always look for leather gear.  This type of gear will usually value dexterity over all other stats.  Choosing Dexterity will increase your dodge (your ability to move quickly out of the way of your enemy) as well as your attack power.  Choosing strength will increase your attack power as well, but will not make as great an impact.  The gear you are offered may have a mix of the two, but because of a Rogues lighter armor, it is always better to seek dexterity (and by extension dodge) and avoid being hit.  Wisdom and intelligence will raise your stats, but these will not benefit your calling.

All rogues should always be duel wielding.   Daggers are most efficient because of their speed, though you can also choose swords if their provide more benefit.  All rogues can also equip either a bow and arrow or gun.  Unlike the mage, warrior and cleric, the ranged weapon of choice is seen in the attack animations of the rogue, though which you choose is dependent on stats.

Mages should choose quest rewards in cloth that offer a higher intelligence count.  Intelligence will increase the rate of Mana you can regenerate as well as increase your spell power.  Although it may be tempting to choose wisdom a mage often operates with little downtime.  The regeneration rate is critical.  As with a cleric, dexterity and strength are of little help to you as a mage.

Mages can use a two-handed staff or a one-handed weapon and an off-hand.  Like the cleric they can equip a non visible wand as well.

A warrior should choose rewards that offer strength.  Strength provides greater perry (the ability to deflect an enemies blows) as well as greater attack power.   Wearing plate gear, the warrior chooses to absorb the enemies attacks rather than dodge them and strength helps in this regard.  As with a rogue, you will not be looking for intelligence or wisdom based stats.

Warriors can choose to carry a shield with an off-hand, though many soul choices no longer require them.  The added armor provided is worth a look though.  They can duel wield two one-hand weapons or use two-handed hammers, swords and Pole arms.  Like the rogue, a ranged weapon can be equipped for stats.

When you are offered a piece of gear, you can quickly see - at a glace - if the gear will be a good fit for you.  The bottom of the gear comparison box offers the conversion, listing stat gains in green and stat losses in red.

At this stage of the game it is suggested to base your choices off of this conversion.  If your primary stat is green it would be an acceptable trade.  Watch out for scenarios where you are gaining one point of your primary stats, but loosing five or more of your secondary stat.  This may not be the ideal upgrade as the gains you are receiving from your primary stat are cancelled out by everything you've lost.

Stat calculation, or "min/max'ing" is tricky business and not as critical at the lower levels.  We will get to that in a later, more in depth exploration
